Twisted cable calculusWritten by Albert Groothedde
100 plus 200 does not equal 300 in the wire and cable manufacturers and distributors. So, basic math doesn’t seem to work in this type of companies.
And that is a challenge for standard ERP systems as they do rely on math. The wire and cable industry requires a specialized ERP solution that understands cable calculus.
Let me give you a simple example.
Think of a contractor who needs to connect a building to the power substation over a distance of 300 meters. He certainly would reject the delivery of two drums with cables of 100m and 200m each: he is not going to make a cable joint halfway the connection! Still, a standard ERP system wouldn’t have any problem sending these two drums to the construction site.
Another, more tricky, example comes from cable production planning. Assume we are stranding 7 wires into a 1,000m conductor. In our inventory we have a 500m length left-over for this wire.
A standard ERP system would advise to draw 6,500m of wire (let’s ignore the lay loss to keep things simple).
Of course this doesn’t make sense in the cable industry. We do need seven separate spools with 1,000m each at the pay-off positions of the strander.
As explained, standard ERP systems cannot deal with cable calculus. These systems are typically designed for either discrete industries or process (continuous flow) industries. However, the processes at wire and cable distributors and manufacturers are neither discrete nor continuous: they are somewhere in between.
That’s why companies in this industry usually have massive customizations to their ERP software, or even developed their bespoke software in-house. Both options result in high Total Costs of Ownership, limited flexibility and lack of innovation.
CableERP from InnoVites is designed exclusively for the specific requirements of wire&cable distributors and manufacturers. With the cloud-based Microsoft Dynamics 365 as its foundation, CableERP offers the best of two worlds. It’s based on the innovative and user-friendly Microsoft technology, and comes with a rich set of functionalities that are designed specifically for the business requirements of wire and cable manufacturers and distributors.
Cable calculus, also called length management, is in the genes of CableERP and fully supported in all transactions.
It means that with CableERP:
- You deliver the cables to your customers in the lengths (tolerances) as agreed
- Your shipment department can run the optimal rewind and cutting operations, based on the orders created by the system.
- Your production team has the right drums in front of the machine to make the customer lengths, while minimizing scrap and change-overs by consolidating production lengths.
